It’s a new decade, and losing weight and getting fit is one of the number one New Year’s resolutions. Cleaning up your diet and working out are two main components to achieving this goal, but what if cozying up on the couch and crying to sappy love movies could assist in your weight loss journey? Don’t start crying just yet, because only one of three types of tears will help you lose weight.
According to a doctor from Los Altos Optometric Group, named Dr. Aaron Neufeld, emotional crying can help one lose body weight because of the linked hormones that heighten the cortisol level that is induced when you have bottled up emotions. The study mentions that crying triggered by real emotions is the only way to reap the benefits.
Biochemist William Frey even discovered that stress-induced tears remove many kinds of toxic substances from the body, and thus concluded that weeping is an excretory process that removes such substances that can build up during times of emotional stress.
In response to this, our body can’t possibly store more fat since you’ve already released the stressful hormones through crying.
Three Basic Types of Tears
Basal Tears
Reflex Tears
The second type of tears result from irritation in the eye. They involuntarily shed due to environmental stressors like smoke, wind, perfumes, tear gas, pepper spray or onions. These tears are also known as reflex tears, as they attempt to wash out irritants that may have come in contact with the eye.
Emotional Tears
The third type is also known as psychic tears and are often referred to as crying or weeping, and are linked to our true feelings and human emotions. Strong emotional stress, pleasure, anger, suffering, mourning, or physical pain can trigger these types of tears.
Emotional tears that roll down our cheeks are said to have the “losing weight” effect. Scientists apparently advised crying between 7pm and 10pm, stating that this is the best time to turn on the water works. Okay, so it looks like I’ll be watching The Notebook around 7pm, every night for the next month.

Jessica Gall Myrick surveyed almost 7,000 people about their viewing of cat videos and how it affects their moods.
“Some people may think watching online cat videos isn’t a serious enough topic for academic research, but the fact is that it’s one of the most popular uses of the Internet today,” Myrick said.
So it’s official, cat videos are good for your health. Thank you to our beloved Lil Bub, Grumpy Cat, Nala Cat and Colonel Meow for keeping us happy and healthy.
